Last call and "Beer Goggles": A peculiarity of vision?

My former college classmate and current personal physician Dr. Dan authors a blog called NA Health, in which he considers numerous medical and health care issues and even the occasional (gasp!) political topic. Our perspectives on the latter typically seem to diverge as the scope widens from purely local matters to items of larger interest, but this doesn’t mean we can’t get along.

However, his recent posting -- entitled Beer Goggles -- pertains to a universal phenomenon certain to make almost all male readers squirm in embarrassed recognition– especially those favoring a wee nip of the grain and the grape:

We’ve all talked about it, and we all joke about it, but is there really an entity called the “beer-goggle” effect?

The issue has come up again recently in the news. It is based on a study performed by Barry T. Jones from the Department of Psychology and his colleagues at the University of Glasgow.

Or, to put it more cimply, it's like Mickey Gilley once asked: "Don't the Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time?"*

Cam medical science shed light on this common condition? Read Dr. Dan’s piece, and find out.
