The next Office Hours with the Publican is Monday, January 9.
Office Hours is an informal tasting that occurs on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month.
On the 9th, we will be sampling the back catalog of the Public House's ciders, mostly French (sorry, no Woodmuck), to determine quite frankly whether they're still drinkable.

Office Hours tonight in Prost.
Between now and next summer, the plan is to hold Office Hours on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month.
Office Hours functions as an informal tasting and beer bull session. During the 2010-2011 season, it was decided to peruse the entirety of the Beer Judge Certification Program style categories as facilitating the Pizzeria & Public House’s guest beer list reform effort.
Now, it has been suggested that we might examine other styles as defined by different governing entities; for example, Black/Cascadian/Escondidan IPA, which is not among the BJCP’s styles. I like this idea, although perhaps not tonight. Sourcing requires advance planning.
Therefore, tonight’s program will include beers TBA for us to sample, as drawn from whatever is available at the Public House, but our primary mission in meeting tonight will be to plot the outline of a course of study for the coming months. The reintroduction of Shelton Brothers imports via the new Starlight Distributing surely will provide one such avenue as time passes. We might explore individual brewery ranges, or esoteric style groupings.

Office Hours with the Publican returns for a third run, with modified scheduling.
Office Hours originated with this post in January, 2010: Office Hours with the Publican?
When the second term of Office Hours began in fall of 2010, there was a gradual shift from improvised to better organized, as we slogged through the length and breadth of the Beer Judge Certification Program’s style guidelines in the run-up to the Public House’s bottled beer list revision.
For Season Three, there will be further changes to the format of Office Hours, primarily involving a new “second and fourth Monday” schedule necessitated by my needing to keep first Mondays open for New Albany city council meetings. Office Hours will continue to meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Prost area.
Here’s the schedule for the remainder of 2011.
October 10: New Glarus Brewing Company; assorted beers foraged by yours truly this past August while in Wisconsin.
October 24: Survey of current NABC & guest draft selections. Lupulin Land will be underway, and so there likely will be a hop accent to these proceedings.
November 14 TBA
November 28 TBA
December 12 TBA
December 19 (3rd Monday to avoid Boxing Day) TBA
The NABC brain trust is contemplating the program for these final four dates, and when we reach a conclusion, it will be posted here.

Select group of Office Hours attendees samples B'Urban Trotter.

Top photo by Rick, bottom one by the Publican.
Last night, NABC's Jared Williamson treated attendees at the final Office Hours of the season to a sample of B'Urban Trotter. It is a powerful Double/Imperial India Pale Ale with a depth of fresh hop aroma seldom experienced hereabouts. Jared informs us that release time is near. Stay tuned.

Office Hours finale tonight, summer break to follow.
Office Hours will begin anew in the fall, probably September. I'm not exactly sure what we'll do then, but there's time to formulate a plan. Suggestions are welcomed.

Office Hours reaches Category 23.
BJCP listing of Lager, minus Bock, at tonight's Office Hours with the Publican.
... and now it's approaching a conclusion.
With summer break looming, tonight at Office Hours with the Publican, we arrive at the final Beer Judge Certification Program style category. It's Category 23 — Specialty Beer, described like this:
This is explicitly a catch-all category for any beer that does not fit into an existing style category. No beer is ever “out of style” in this category, unless it fits elsewhere.
Unusual "techniques or ingredients" fall in Category 23, such as the steinbier method (stone-brewing) and the use of potatoes as an adjunct.
It's also referred to as an “incubator,” intended for existing styles deemed not yet appropriate to have a category or sub-category, although Belgians are excepted and given their own catch-all. Examples in Category 23 include Australian Sparkling Ale and Czech Dark Lager, as well as one of particular interest to us lately: Rye IPA.
I'm heading to Keg Liquors shortly for field research. Office Hours begins at 6:30 p.m.; it's five bucks per head; and we'll be in Prost, as always.

Office Hours tonight: "Category 22 — Smoke-Flavored/Wood-Aged Beer."
Tonight (Monday, May 16), it’s Category 22 — Smoke-Flavored/Wood-Aged Beer:
22A. Classic Rauchbier
22B. Other Smoked Beer
22C. Wood-Aged Beer
As many of you know, these styles are among my personal favorites. We begin deliberations at 6:30 p.m. at the Public House, back in the rear area of Prost.
Next Monday, May 23, will be the grab bag known as 23. SPECIALTY BEER, which completes the BJCP style examination we began last summer.
The following Monday, May 30, is the Memorial Day holiday, and there'll be no Office Hours. However, there may well be a final hurrah on Monday, June 6 … more on that one later.

Urbain madness at Bank Street and the Public House, Sunday and Monday -- for collaborations and more.
But there's more.
On Sunday (May 8), Urbain joins David Pierce and Jared Williamson, and Lori and Tyler, for brunch, Bloody Marys and an afternoon collaboration brew at NABC's Bank Street Brewhouse. I'm told that the target recipe is a Belgian Blonde Ale with American hops, reportedly to be called Naughty Girl.
Then on Monday, May 9, there'll be another collaboration at NABC's R & D brewery at the Pizzeria & Public House, this time involving a Derby-inspired Imperial India Pale Ale with bourbon-soaked oak spirals and mint. It turns out that Urbain is an ostrich farmer in his spare (?) time, and grafting jockeys onto ostriches leads inevitably to visions of B'Urban Trotter Ale.
Let's hope NABC's graphics wizard Tony Beard is reading.
Monday will conclude with an Office Hours Special Edition in Prost, with our Monday night tasting session transformed into a post-brewing day recap party and meet 'n' greet with Urbain, who presumably will return to Belgium later in the week for an extended stint in rehab ... as will I, but without going to Belgium (damn).
Expect Office Hours beers from Struise, NABC, and others, depending on what can be foraged.

Office Hours is back: April 25 & May 9 schedules.
Sort of.
The bad news: I need another Monday off on the 2nd of May.
The good news: We'll manage two Office Hours gatherings during the next three weeks, anyway, culminating in a very unique evening on the 9th of May.
Here's the schedule.
April 25: BJCP Categories 20 & 21 (below)
May 2: Roger must attend the final city council meeting prior to the primary election the next day; no Office Hours.
May 9: Office Hours Special Edition, with Struise's Urbain Coutteau, who’ll be wrapping up Struise's Awesome Midwest Travel Itinerary after a weekend of Derby debauchery. It’s all been organized by Lori and Tyler at Louisville Beer Store/Holy Grale. Earlier on Monday, there’ll be a collaborative brew with Urbain and the brew crews from NABC and LBS/HG. Office Hours will be transformed into the post-brewing day recap party, with appropriate beers from Struise, NABC, and others.
OFFICE HOURS for Monday, April 25, 2011
***BJCP Category 20 – Fruit Beer
20. Fruit Beer
***BJCP Category 21 – Spice/Herb/Vegetable Beer
21A. Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer
21B. Christmas/Winter Specialty Spiced Beer

Office Hours hiatus: We will seek to return on April 25.
Blame it partly on Butler’s second NCAA title run, and also on politics, my city council campaign and a generally overcrowded spring schedule. The upshot is this: Office Hours with the Publican must take a break.
On Monday night (April 4th), we’ll all be distracted by basketball, and not only that, there’s a city council meeting to attend.
There are campaign events on the following two Mondays (April 11 and 18). At each, all the council candidates have the opportunity to speak, and given that most of my politicking so far has taken place where I drink, I can’t turn down chances to address groups of people.
This leaves us with the possibility of returning to Office Hours on the 25th, and we may be able to squeeze another four or five sessions into the time remaining before summer break. We still have a few BJCP categories to cover, and will do so.
To summarize: No Office Hours until the 25th of April. Thank you for understanding.

Office Hours tonight: Vintage gravity from the cellar.
We'll begin this evening at 6:30 p.m., in back of Prost. See you there.
Saturday, March 19, 2011
Postponement: Office Hours will NOT be held this Monday, March 21.
Instead: The Stone/BBC (and others) vintage tasting will take place in Prost on Monday, March 28.

Office Hours returns tonight: It's the #19 vintage stash.
19A. Old Ale
19B. English Barleywine
19C. American Barleywine
Exact selections await my scrutiny, although I can say this much: There'll be a vertical tasting of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot vintages, and some old JW Lees Vintage Harvest Ale, perhaps a few of the barrel-aged ones, too.
If there's time, I'll edit this entry and post the picks.

March 7 Office Hours is postponed until the 14th.
I'm very sorry for the inconvenience, although it WILL be worth the wait.
Monday, February 28, 2011
Tonight: Office Hours (Strong Ales) & Gravity Head lineupdate.
If time permits, we'll root through the cellar and see if a few examples of aged styles can be found, perhaps for vertical comparison against fresher examples, or perhaps not. This might take a Monday or two, either way. The public is invited, and the price is $5 per person.

Office Hours for Monday, February 14: Trappists for my sweetie on Valentine's Day.
For tomorrow night's Office Hours, we'll be switching the agenda I announced some time back, but which I'd already been contradicting aloud because I had it in my head that Trappists were going to be on Valentine's Day. They are. This is final. Remember that Trappists fall into various BJCP style categories. For Monday night the 14th, we're going to drink Trappists, chat about Trappists, and dispense with the usual style sheets, although I'll make an effort to note where they usually are placed.
Monday, February 21
Category 18 — Belgian Strong Ale (minus certified Trappists)
18A. Belgian Blond Ale
18B. Belgian Dubbel
18C. Belgian Tripel
18D. Belgian Golden Strong Ale
18E. Belgian Dark Strong Ale
Monday, January 31, 2011
BJCP Category 17 (Sour Ale) tonight at Office Hours.
17A. Berliner Weisse
17B. Flanders Red Ale
17C. Flanders Brown Ale/Oud Bruin
17D. Straight (Unblended) Lambic
17E. Gueuze
17F. Fruit Lambic
As with last week's Belgians, I must again ask for a bit larger tasting fee of $10 a head tonight. The kicker is that a few of these are impossible to find at present, and it might be a while before we get them back owing to wholesale distribution problems.

Office Hours tonight: Belgian and French Ales from Category 16 (Part Two).
This is a catch-all category for any Belgian-style beer not fitting any other Belgian style category. The category can be used for specific beers; to produce a beer fitting a broader style that doesn’t have its own category; or to create an artisanal or experimental beer of the brewer’s own choosing (e.g., strong Belgian golden ale with spices, something unique).
There is no doubt in my mind that as a catch-all category, 16E is a sprawling and imperfect mess, ranging from Trappists (we're holding these for their own night - see the comprehensive schedule for details) to Saisons (Moinette, Bon Voeux) and quasi-Lambics (Lindemans?) placed here owing to minute differences with the necessary arbitrariness of their own categories, and including products from Achouffe, De Dolle and Ellezelloise (Belgium); Unibroue (Canada) and New Belgium (USA).
In Belgium, my experience is that most cafes resort to geography: If it comes from the French-speaking region of Wallonia, it's a Wallonian ale, case closed.
Several of tonight's beers are on the expensive side, so I must ask for $10 a head this evening. In return, we will open a bottle of DeuS, which retails for over $30. Other choices will come from the discard list, i.e., excellent Belgians that we cannot purchase on a daily basis, placing them in the "rotating appearance" category henceforth.
This one's going to be a diverse tasting, with quite little rhyme or reason to it. Before I forget, if you missed them, Amy W. posted her photos from last week:
