Snow days and those difficult "close/delay" calls.

My neighbor Austin helped out when it snowed earlier this week. He shovels; I drink.

It's snowing in metro Louisville. The accumulation isn't tremendous, just enough to throw into turmoil a vicinity that never has and never will be prepared for it.

I'm no longer in a position to make these "bad weather" calls, and yet I was please to see these words from a restaurant manager on social media earlier today.

If you're a restaurant owner/manager who remained open through this afternoon's weather because "the city needs you," then you need to "get over yourself." I've been on both sides of this decision, but I think this morning is a definite no-brainer.

It's tough, especially on Friday, when you know you'll be making bank -- except with snow, it wouldn't be an ordinary Friday, anyway. A couple of points are worth remembering.

First, that there'll probably be better volume for a few days after roads return to normal. People will compensate for interruptions to their routines.

Second, you can't fall into the trap of thinking that one or two abnormal days will make or break you. There are many days in a year. You need to think about the little things you can do during each one of them to improve business.

Forget the exceptions. Concentrate on the rules. I have two growlers in the fridge, anyway -- and a shitload of gin.

"A Winter Storm Message from NABC's Founder."

Yeah, whatever; we'll all be dead by Tuesday, frozen and snowed into oblivion. Shakespeare's oft-quoted line, "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers," turns out to have been inaccurate, given that there were no weather forecasters in the playwright's time.

He'd have changed his tune, and consumed a few ales. That's what I'm saying.

Public House second shift only Monday and Tuesday.

Kate found staff for the Public House, so although Office Hours is postponed until next Monday, the Pub is open on Monday night. On Tuesday, the Public House will not open until 5 p.m., although the Pizzeria will operate from 11:00 a.m. Got it?

Monday NABC scheduling: Pizzeria open, Office Hours postponed.

NABC's Pizzeria & Public House will run today via our "half open" weather schedule, i..e, seating at the Pizzeria and reduced staffing.

The Office Hours with the Publican session scheduled for tonight will be postponed until next week, with the IPA topic remaining the same.

Bank Street Brewhouse is closed always closed on Monday. We'll be back at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Usual hours at both NABC locations. Who else?

As of now (11:00 a.m.) it's NABC business hours as usual today: 11:00 a.m. at the Pizzeria & Public House, and 2:00 p.m. at Bank Street Brewhouse. We're playing it by ear, and I'll keep you posted if anything changes.

Anyone else like to tag in? Who is open? Who is closed?

FYI: Tomorrow night's a long way off, but at this time, I do not foresee altering the planned "Here's to Beer" class meeting. It will go at 6:30 p.m. unless something unexpected occurs.

NABC will be open at noon on Wednesday the 28th (Sportstime side).

Update:

Kate and Jesse are in the building (no power outage), and enough of the crew can be rounded up to open for business at noon, pizza side only. I'll provide updates later, but for now, there is food and beer on Plaza Drive from noon on.

Snow day for NABC today (Tuesday the 27th).

Because we're a destination of sorts, I feel compelled to let you know that we decided to take a snow day today and close NABC, Rich O's and Sportstime.

We have a couple of key employees who are snowbond in the Knobs, and as far as we're concerned, safety first.

Perhaps we'll do a snow day makeup some sunny Sunday in June ...
