Every 1's a winner on a beautiful winter/spring day in Indianapolis.

Porter, that is.

As it turned out, we never made it to Winterfest yesterday.

D and I drove up to Indianapolis early so we'd have time to explore before going to the State Fairgrounds. She'd never been to the Fountain Square neighborhood, and it's been two years for me, so we parked there and started looking for coffee.

The record will show that it was as gorgeous a spring day as one might imagine occurring on Saturday, January 30.

After lunch at End of the Line, we were browsing shops and happened to overhear two couples talking about going to Winterfest later in the afternoon. One couple had tickets, and the other did not. The ones who didn't have tickets were from out of state. Because the event was a sellout, they were debating creative ways of scoring two additional tickets.

Obviously, they were complete strangers to us, and the back story was unclear from eavesdropping, although my impression was that someone had forgotten to purchase four tickets and bought only two, hence the snafu.

Well, we could fix THAT, couldn't we?

After a brief chat with D, we gave them our tickets with only one small caveat: They were to find Salt Creek Brewery's booth, say hello to Brad, and have a sample or three for me. I hope they did, but it's okay if not.

In my world, all's well that ends well.

After beers at Fountain Square Brewing Company, where we chatted with a few fest-goers from Peoria, we walked the cultural trail pedway along Virginia Avenue to the center and doubled back via the city market, stopping at Chilly Water Brewing for another round. The urban changes along this corridor were utterly fascinating, and it was a gorgeous day on top of it.

I hope those folks (and many others) had a good time at Winterfest. Concurrently, we had much fun just wandering through Indianapolis. Serendipity is a powerful motive force, don't you think?

More than 80 Indiana breweries are booked for Winterfest 2016.

The guild is approaching 80% member participation, which is wonderful. Who needs beer from outside the state of Indiana with a choice like this?

BIG Winterfest recap, 2015 edition.

When we're able to throw a party this big in Indianapolis on Super Bowl weekend without snow, it's a positive. I concede that fests of this magnitude are not really my speed any longer, but Winterfest seemed to proceed smoothly. The Dump Buckets do video ...

Sours, spice and bacon? 5 craft beer trends from Winterfest, by Amy Haneline (Indy Star)

While a Super Bowl commercial from Budweiser poked fun at beer geeks sipping on pumpkin peach ales — it was those crazy combinations of flavors that pulled more than 5,000 attendees to the 7th Annual Brewers of Indiana Guild Winterfest.

Forget the house staples, Winterfest is about specialty and small-batch. At least that is what people remember.

Volunteer at Winterfest

Interested in volunteering at one of Indiana's best beer fests? There are two shift options:
  1. Set up: You'll help set up Friday, 1/30, from 10am-5pm (food will be provided) and Saturday, 1/31, from 9am-noon. If you help to set up both days, you will receive 2 Early Bird tickets, one for you and one for a friend. This will be limited to 12 volunteers, so go ahead and sign up to volunteer during the festival, just in case.
  2. At Winterfest: Saturday, 1/31, from 10am-8pm. Food will be provided. You're attending the festival, so you already have Early Bird access.
And yes, there will be a volunteer "you are awesome" party to thank you for all of your hard work!

Feel free to send this email to your friends, but please make sure they want to work and aren't signing up just to enjoy free beer. It's true that the best volunteers can enjoy beer while working, too.

Apply to volunteer now.

Big thanks to Hoosier Beer Geek for leading our volunteer effort!

Take the Winterfest survey and help BIG plan future shindigs.

For those readers who have attended Winterfests (annually in January, and in Indianapolis), the Brewers of Indiana Guild would like some feedback. We've been considering various ideas pertaining to improving the fest. Here's the link:

BIG Winterfest news ... the show is this Saturday, January 26.

With Winterfest coming this Saturday, here are a few items of importance passed along to us by the executive director of the Brewers of Indiana Guild. My personal favorite is the Online Program link. You can view NABC's lineup here, as well.

Fine Dining, Craft Beer and Jazz!
The Jazz Kitchen is hosting a beer dinner on Thursday, January 24, featuring North Coast Beer. $35 includes a 4-course dinner, beer and gratuity. What a deal! Reservations and info here.

Looking for a place to stay this weekend?
Indy Hostel says they are closest to the State Fairgrounds. For me, "Hostel" brings to mind bunk beds and cots in the attic, but this looks pretty nice (also promises a good deal!). For more info -- Indy Hostel link.

Brewing LEGEND Jack McAuliffe at Winterfest!
Back in the 1970s, Jack McAuliffe opened the first US microbrewery. New Albion Brewing sold hand-crafted beer that sold for the exorbitant price of $1.10 per bottle! Boston Beer Co. has collaborated with Jack to brew a limited-edition New Albion Ale, Jack will be at Winterfest for the first Indiana tapping of this iconic beer. We'll toast Jack as the VIP hour winds down, around 3:45. Listen for the announcement.

Sellout!
Winterfest tickets are really, truly sold out. Sold out in record time two weeks ago. But tickets just went on sale for the Bloomington Craft Beer Festival. B-Fest is 12 weeks away, on April 13. Spread the word on tickets. Here's the link

DRAFT

Dirty Squirrel
Belgian Black Ale
ABV: 8.5% … IBU: 69
Color: Deep brownish-red to black.
Flavor: Full bodied. Fruity Belgian esters alter a flavor similar to that of Porter, but too hoppy to be Porter.
Compare to: unique; no commercial examples.

Hoosier Daddy
Crimson & Cream Ale
ABV: 7% ... IBU: 35
Color: Reddish/brown.
Flavor: Medium-bodied, with overall balance favoring malt, and a slightly sweet edge.
Compare to: Unique, but much closer to the idea of an Imperial Red Ale than Elector (which it vaguely resembles).

Old Lightning Rod
Colonial Dark Ale
ABV: 7.5% … IBU: 26
Color: Dark brown to black.
Flavor: Medium- to full-bodied, sweetish and malt-heavy. Distinctive flavor comes from molasses and sorghum.
Compare to: No commercial examples, but OLR is in the same flavor range as darker, sweeter beers like Wee Heavy, Doppelbock and some higher-gravity Belgians.

Propagator Doppelbock 2012
Bavarian Doppelbock
ABV: 7.5% … IBU: 20
Color: Dark brown.
Flavor: Full-bodied and rich German malt impression.
Compare to: Celebrator, Optimator, Salvator.

Holly King (non-barrel-aged Replicale)
English-style Winter Warmer
ABV: 7.5% … IBU: 40
Color: Brown.
Flavor: Medium– to full-bodied. Use of Boddington’s English yeast yields smooth nutty and biscuity flavors.
Compare to:  Samuel Smith Winter Welcome

CASK-CONDITIONED FIRKINS

Beak’s Best (dry hopped)
Anglo-American Ale
ABV: 5.3% ... IBU: 35
Color: Amber/orange.
Flavor: Light- to medium-bodied, with citrusy American finishing hop character.
Compare to: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and other American Pale Ales; also some ESBs (Redhook, Fuller’s).

Naughty Girl (double dry-hopped)
India Blonde Ale
ABV: 6% ... IBU: 69
Color: Golden-to-amber.
Flavor: Medium-bodied. Restrained Belgian fruitiness. Assertive hopping, but falling well short of Hoptimus levels.
Compare to: A hoppy Belgian blonde ale, and unique.

Ackerman’s lives again: The 2011 BIG Winterfest ReplicAle is Imperial Double Stout ...

... an historic New Albany beer recipe reclaimed by the NABC brew team.

When Indiana’s craft brewers convene in Indianapolis for the annual Winterfest gala on Saturday, January 29, they’ll each bring a “ReplicAle.”

It’s a special one-time beer brewed by different Indiana brewing companies from the same basic recipe of malts and hops, but with their own local water and house yeasts.

The 2011 Winterfest recipe for ReplicAle, as researched and recreated by the New Albanian Brewing Company’s Jared Williamson and Jesse Williams, is Imperial Double Stout – an iconic product once brewed by New Albany’s long defunct Ackerman’s Brewery.

It has been three-quarters of a century since Imperial Double Stout was last seen hereabouts. Just after the repeal of Prohibition, it was formulated, brewed and distributed by the Southern Indiana Ice & Brewing Company, which was known locally as Ackerman’s Brewery.

Ackerman’s operated from 1933 to 1935 at the site of the former Paul Reising Brewing Company premises on the corner of West 5th and Spring Streets in New Albany. The brewery building was demolished in 1969 to make way for what is now the Holiday Inn Express.

In its brief heyday, Ackerman’s Imperial Double Stout was brewed only once each year, at Easter, as an early springtime treat for the brewery’s loyal customers.

Imperial Double Stout was meant as a substitute for Doppelbock, a German style traditionally served during Lenten fasts. It is rich, dark, strong and ideal for contemplative, cool-weather sipping.

As is customary, Winterfest attendees get the first chance to sample, contrast and compare Imperial Double Stout’s various reincarnations as brewed by breweries all across the state of Indiana.

Afterwards, limited amounts of NABC’s version of the elixir will be poured at NABC’s two New Albany locations, providing a tasty and educational glimpse into New Albany’s brewing past.

Jared’s and Jesse’s Imperial Double Stout recipe specifications:

Original Gravity: 20 degree Plato
Alcohol By Volume: Circa 8%
International Bittering Units: 35 – 40

Grist Bill:
80% Rahr 2-row Pale Malt
5% Briess Aromatic Malt
5% Briess Dark Chocolate Malt
5% Briess Roast Barley
2.5% Briess 80-degree Caramel Malt
2.5% Briess Cherry Smoked Malt

Hops:
Single addition at boil of your choice of hop, to achieve 35 - 40 IBU

Miscellany … Did you know:
