Headlines from October 2017 on THE BEER BEAT.

Previously, I've explained why this blog has gone on hiatus, adding that my thoughts about beer will be posted alongside my utterances about everything else, over yonder at NA Confidential.

You'll find them there via the helpful all-purpose tag, The Beer Beat.

However, whenever the urge strikes -- I seem to have settled on monthly -- I'll collect a few of these links right here. Following are October's ruminations, with the oldest listed first.

Some are more topical than others. In October, there were several travel-related postings using "The Beer Beat" as a label, but not as a title. I hope this isn't overly confusing.

Thanks for reading, if belatedly.

---

THE BEER BEAT: "Craft," "quality" and other beer semantics -- but independence genuinely matters to me.

One conclusion of Bryan Roth's piece on the beer semantics of craft and quality is that relatively few beer consumers as yet care very much about the ownership of the brewery so long as the components denoted by "craft" are present.

In short, whether the brewery is independent or monolithic/corporate just isn't a consideration because it tells consumers little about "quality" as this concept is applied to the denominator "craft."

---

The 2017 Poperinge Hop Parade, Part One: One must pour the proper foundation for maximum parade enjoyment.

Back at the Grote Markt, there were leftover tokens from the previous day's visit to the "Lekker Westhoeks" beer sampling. As we sipped again on Sunday, the visiting band from Wolnzach in Bavaria serenaded the denizens of nearby sidewalk cafes.

---

The 2017 Poperinge Hop Parade, Part Two: The procession itself, and where to dine afterward.

Poperinge's triennial hop parade seeks to tell the story of the magic cone used in the production of beer, as placed in the historical context of the Westhoek ("west corner") region of Flanders, embracing this vicinity in Belgium as well as a slice of nearby France.

---

THE BEER BEAT: From Sunday sales in Indiana to garlic tastings, an overview of informative news items.

Having recently returned from fact-finding mission to Belgium and the Netherlands, and while in Haarlem enjoying enjoyed more than one session at the Jopenkerk, it's an excellent time to remind readers that there's no better use for a shuttered church than to trasnform it into a house of beer worship.

---

THE BEER BEAT: The Second Annual Harvest Craft Beer Hop takes place on Friday, October 13.

Last year restaurateur Ian Hall and his crew at The Exchange pub + kitchen organized the first Harvest Craft Beer Hop. This year it's bigger and better, featuring a stellar lineup of downtown New Albany's food and drink establishments ... 13 in all.

---

Out there in the fields, or a visit to De Plukker Hop Farm Brewery outside Poperinge.

Luc had decided that with the weather as yet variable, he'd use the car, and so off we went for an inspection of De Plukker, an organic hop farm and brewery.

---

THE BEER BEAT: Beaumont's list of top-notch airport bars somehow prompts a Super Bock memory.

For some unknown reason, Stephen missed the Super Bock Lounge at Francisco Sa Carneiro International Airport in Porto, Portugal. Seeing as it will be the next "airport of call" for the Confidentials come February, I may have to heed the call of duty and investigate.

---

THE BEER BEAT: Louisville KY Craft Beer Week VIII begins today ... in Jeffersonville.

For a dram of perspective, let's glance back at the inception of the celebration in September, 2010.

---

ON THE AVENUES: I'd like nothing more than to go for another ride.

Regular readers know that Diana and I recently traveled to Europe, spending the bulk of our time in Poperinge, Belgium and Haarlem, Netherlands.

Kevin was a big fan of both these places, and when we returned to them a month ago, each bicyclist I saw pedaling past – there were hundreds in all – reminded me of the epic beercycling times we had.

It will surprise absolutely no one to learn that our acquaintance began in the late 1980s over beer, not bicycles. Kevin started patronizing Scoreboard Liquors, the package store where I worked, and after a brief lull (I believe he moved away for a short time) we met again when the Public House came into existence in 1992.

---

THE BEER BEAT: "One hundred years ago, Britain nationalized hundreds of its pubs — and invented a better drinking culture."

Simply stated, speaking as one who is fascinated by World War I and British pub culture and the notion of prohibition, this is a worthy digression to which I'll be returning.

Louisville Craft Beer Week kicks off tonight with the 2nd Annual Craft Beer Cask Festival at BBC.

Louisville Craft Beer Week kicks off tonight at 6:00 p.m. with the Second Annual Craft Beer Cask Festival at Bluegrass Brewing Company's location at 3929 Shelbyville Road in Louisville, Kentucky.

Here's the event description, followed by more photos from last year's inaugural cask fest:

On September 16 from 6-9pm. we will be having our 2nd annual Cask and Microbrew festival featuring 30+ Micro brewed cask and tap beers. Local Breweries New Albanian, Cumberland Brews, and BBC Taproom will be participating as well as many breweries in the surrounding areas, including but not limited to, Upland, Left Hand, Great Lakes, Bells, Schlafly and many more. This is event is the kick off for Louisville Craft Beer Week. Tickets can be purchased at any of the 3 BBC brewpub locations for $30 and they include unlimited beer during the event, and a LCBW commemorative sampling glass. We will have live music during the festival as well. Starting at 9:00 Dirty Church Revival will be playing in the parking lot with a $5.00 cover. The remaining beers from the fest will be on sale to the general public after 9 as well. Folks who attended the fest will still be able to get sample sized beers at no charge until midnight.

Life is hectic.

22-oz bombers of Jaxon, Yakima and Tunnel Vision are going to Cavalier Distributing in Indianapolis, and to River City Distributing in Louisville. Next up: Kentucky at-large. More on that, coming soon.

Louisville Craft Beer Week begins Friday at BBC St. Matthews, and Strassenfest is taking place on New Albany's riverfront on Saturday.

We're making plans for Fringe Fest 2011, amid the usual bedlam of New Albany's Harvest Homecoming.

There is other news to report -- something about a li'l ol' bridge thingy -- but we have too much to do to pay very much attention.

Any "unusual" cues from Philly Beer Week?

I'm not in the habit of reprinting press releases verbatim, but this one strikes a chord, because the Louisville Craft Beer Week committee has started planning this year's LCBW (September 16-24), and a "wealth of unusual events" similar to these might be the ticket ... just thinking out loud.

---

PHILLY BEER WEEK 2011 TO FEATURE A WEALTH OF UNUSUAL EVENTS INCLUDING A DUNK TANK, BEER-LEBRITY BOXING, BULL RIDING, A GONG SHOW AND MORE…

PHILADELPHIA, PA – This June during
Philly Beer Week (PBW) 2011, visitors will enjoy several usual events that combine amazing beer with everything from a foot race and a boxing match to a late night variety show and riding a mechanical bull.

“Part of the fun of PBW is interacting with brewers and beer reps in a fun, casual setting – and nothing could be more fun than the chance to dunk one of them for charity, or compete with them to see who can stay on a mechanical bull the longest,” says PBW Executive Director Don Russell, aka Daily News columnist Joe Sixpack. “It’s events like these that make PBW so popular and special.”

Some of the more unique events include:

Saturday, June 4:

Beer-lebrity Boxing at Kite & Key (1836 Callowhill Street, 215-568-1818) – 2 p.m.

A series of epic boxing match-ups will pit brewers against one another in the ring with oversized gloves and no holds barred. Undercards will include “Brothers in Brewing” featuring Steve and Doug Mashington from Yards vs. Paul Rutherford (Iron Hill) and Andrew Rutherford (Yards), refereed by Casey Hughes of Flying Fish, and “The Ladies of Craft Beer” featuring Wendy Domurat of Dogfish Head vs. Suzanne Woods of Sly Fox, refereed by Megan Maguire of Ommegang. The main event will be Tom Kehoe of Yards vs. Jim Kirk, owner of Kite & Key. Beers from all participating “boxers” will be featured on draft.

Sunday, June 5:
“The Wire” Quizzo with Johnny Goodtimes at The POPE (1501 E. Passyunk Ave. 215-755-5125) – 9 p.m.

North Coast Brewer Doug Moody will join legendary quiz master Johnny Goodtimes for an evening of beer and quizzo based on the HBO Show “The Wire.”

Monday, June 6, 7, 8 and 9: Late Night with Joe Gunn at Jose Pistola’s (263 South 15th Street, 215-545-4101)– 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Join Jose Pistola’s owner Joe Gunn for his very special Late Night Variety Show. There is no way to do this evening justice, think surreal Late Night with David Letterman. Joe will invite attendees “on stage” to be interviewed. There will also be visits from brewers, live music and the occasional whiskey drinking.

Tuesday, June 7:
Dunk a Beer-lebrity at London Grill (2301 Fairmount Avenue, 215-978-4545) - 4 to 8 p.m.

Dunkees will take to the tank in 15-minute blocks and guests will pay as they go for the opportunity to get the brewers and reps all wet, with proceeds benefitting
PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society). Chef Michael McNally will be grilling food outdoors throughout the event, and of course, a host of terrific beers will be available, as well. The dunk tank line-up will include: Tom Buonanno of Muller Beverages; Steve Mashington of Yards; Eric Vanzile of Ithaca; Jim Meiers and Jim Wiggins of Origlio; Suzy Woods of Sly Fox; Dan Conway of Left Hand; Michael Pearlman of Stoudt’s; Cameron Saunders of Shangy’s; Mike Lubeski of Weyerbacher; Casey Hughes of Flying Fish; Brian Grossman of Sierra Nevada; John Hobbs and Jenny Hobbs of Spy vs. Spy; and Rich Allen of Long Trail.

Tuesday, June 7:
Mechanical Bull Riding at Percy Street Barbecue (900 South Street, 215-625-8510) - 7 to 11 p.m.

For the second year in a row, Percy Street will bring in a mechanical bull. Guests will pay-as-they-go to ride and try to win prizes. Chef Erin O’Shea will prepare barbecue specials and Victory Brewing Company will offer special beers throughout the event.

Wednesday, June 8:
Bike the Ben (outside Race Street Café) – 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Set out from Race Street Café for a leisurely ride over the Ben Franklin Bridge. Before crossing, the group will stop at the base of the bridge for a special tasting of bridge-themed beers served from Trophy Bike’s custom-made Dutch Bakfiets cargo bike and bar. There will also be small bites served from the Surly Big Dummy cargo bike. After riders sip and snack, they’ll head out over the Ben to catch a glimpse of the sunset and maybe even a bit of the Camden Riversharks baseball game. Bikers must bring a helmet, lock and lights to participate. The event is free, contact
http://us.mc1147.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=mcget@aol.com to sign up.

Thursday, June 9: Gong Show at Standard Tap (901 North 3rd Street, 215-238-0630) – 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Sponsored by Philadelphia Brewing Company, come show off your talents to win prizes, but you better be good, or they'll gong ya off the stage. Sign up at 7:30 p.m., event starts at 8 p.m.

Friday, June 10:
Ride The Rails with Boxcar Brewing Company (306 Westtown Road - 484-887-0538) – 7 to 11 p.m.

Boxcar Brewing invites you to join them for an exclusive unveiling of their great beers aboard the West Chester Railroad. Board the train, grab a beer and ride the rails to the Glen Mills picnic grove, where food, beverage (more beer) and entertainment will be provided. Dress comfortably for your ride on the old fashioned rails and feel free to bring chairs or blankets for your time at the park. Train will return at approximately 10:30 p.m. Reservations are required. Must be 21 years of age or older to attend.

Sunday, June 12:
Dock Street to Dock Street Run (701 South 50th Street – 215-726-2337) – 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Run for great beer and prizes from Dock Street in Old City to the brewpub. Along the run, participants will collect clues that will award them prizes. Runners will end at Dock Street Brewery to pick up their prizes, have a beer and enjoy an outdoor music festival. Free to run, contact
http://us.mc1147.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=bryan@brewlounge.com to sign up.

PBW 2011 is a 10-day celebration of “America’s Best Beer-Drinking City,” held from Friday, June 3 until Sunday, June 12. Established in 2008, it’s the largest beer celebration of its kind in the United States, featuring hundreds of festivals, dinners, tours, pub crawls, tastings and meet-the-brewer nights throughout Greater Philadelphia. Strassenfest today!

Last night's cask conditioned kickoff for the inaugural Louisville Craft Beer Week was a success. The parking lot at BBC on Shelbyville Road was filled tents, tables, food vendors and the main attraction: Naturally carbonated firkins and pins.

Day Two of LCBW is all about German beer culture as viewed through the lens of craft beer, with Strassenfest at New Albany's Riverfront Amphitheater beginning at 3:00 p.m. It's shaping up to be a beautiful day, so stop in for a beer and a brat. We'll be serving beer and food (from Steinert's) until last call at 10:30 p.m. The event is designed to be for all ages, and there'll be music, art, storytelling and fun for the kids, as is the custom at similar gatherings in Central Europe.

It could be the start of a fine new pre-Harvest Homecoming tradition in New Albany. Hope to see readers there, some time this afternoon and evening.

Cask beer, German-style beer, beer pairings with brunch ... and that's just the first three days of LCBW.

We're only days away from the Friday kick-off of Louisville Craft Beer Week, and while I may have more to say about the overall plan in tomorrow's Wednesday Weekly, permit me to place a spotlight on marquee events during the opening weekend.

Louisville Craft Beer Week's first event is the Cask Beer Festival taking place at Bluegrass Brewing Company's St. Matthews location on Friday night, September 24. It's all about cask-conditioned beers in the British sense, and it will run outside in the parking lot. There should be somewhere around 30 firkins pouring. Admission to the festival is $30.00 and includes a souvenir LCBW tasting glass and all of the cask beer you care to drink.

The scene shifts to New Albany on Saturday, September 25, for Strassenfest at New Albany's Riverfront Amphitheater. Broadly speaking, Strassenfest is intended as a family-friendly homage to the German ethos, in beer, food and entertainment. Admission is free, with cash beer bar featuring Oktoberfests and German-derived beers from many loal and regional brewers.

On Sunday, Bank Street Brewhouse keeps the ball in NA, as we stage Craft Beer for Brunch at BSB. Chef Josh Lehman has designed a brunch menu with craft beer pairings; the Sunday Bloody Mary Sunday bar will be creational; there'll be growlers of NABC available for carry-out; and pending permission from the regulatory authorities, leftover Oktoberfest kegs will be tapped on the patio.

The whole Louisville Craft Beer Week story is at the website.

Louisville Craft Beer Week begins on Sept. 24. Here is an overview of the celebration.

LOUISVILLE CRAFT BEER WEEK 2010

Sept. 24 – Oct. 2, 2010
Educate … Inspire … Imbibe

We’re happy to announce the first annual Louisville Craft Beer Week. For nine consecutive hop- and malt-packed days, from Friday, September 24 through Saturday, (October 2), Louisville Craft Beer Week is everywhere, with themed craft beer festivals, craft beer tastings, craft beer dinners, craft beer samplings, and even a motorized craft beer pub crawl.

Louisville Craft Beer Week is all of us: Breweries and wholesalers, package retailers and pubs, bars and restaurants, homebrewers and serial growler fillers.

Most importantly, Louisville Craft Beer Week is you: Craft beer lovers living, working and playing right here in our region. Your patronage and enthusiasm makes it happen for all of us, and we thank you.

Louisville Craft Beer Week is modeled on similar celebrations in places like Philadelphia and Cleveland, but whatever the locale, the intent remains the same: Showcasing the incredible variety, dynamism and expanding market presence of craft brewing in America.

When you’re out and about during Louisville Craft Beer Week, always drink responsibly and whatever you do, don’t drive drunk.

Lousville Craft Beer Week's Strassenfest at the Riverfront Amphitheater will be September 25.

The first-ever Louisville Craft Beer Week will run from September 24 through October 2. LCBW is a cooperative venture organized by Louisville area brewers and purveyors of craft beer, designed to, "Educate ... Inspire ... Imbibe."

There'll be big beer events every night during the week, and numerous smaller happenings around the metro area staged and hosted by pubs, restaurants and package stores. The majority of American craft brewers with a presence in Louisville will be represented at some point during the week.

Facebook page with schedule
August 9 LCBW golf scramble details

Craft beer fans in New Albany should mark their calendars for Saturday, September 25, when the Strassenfest already scheduled for the Riverfront Amphitheater will partner with Louisville Craft Beer Week to produce an Oktoberfest-style party with German-themed draft beers from participating LCBW breweries, both local and regional, along with appropriate food and music.

NABC is happy to host this Sunnyside Strassenfest on behalf of the LCBW, and thanks go to the riverfront committee for so eagerly embracing the concept. It's a natural conclusion to the amphitheater's summer season and just as obvious segue into Harvest Homecoming (kickoff parade on Oct. 2).
