The NABC Pizzeria and Pub will be smoke-free as of January 1, 2011.

Good news for some, and bad news for others.

We decided earlier today after an ownership meeting to make the entire Pizzeria & Public House building at 3312 Plaza Drive … for old timers, Sportstime & Rich O’s … non-smoking, effective January 1, 2011.

This is our choice, and not one mandated by local government, although I concede it’s only a matter of time until the decree is issued. Although I smoke cigars, and not being able to smoke a cigar in my own bar will take some getting used to, it is my belief that the time has come to acquiesce to changing attitudes and societal norms. Spittoons were removed from most taverns long ago.

The argument from workplace safety is a compelling and well nigh irrefutable one. The case aesthetically is equally convincing. The simple fact of the matter from management’s perspective is that trying to balance smoking and non-smoking needs in the context of the configuration of an establishment like ours has become maddening. In practical, everyday ways, the tail is wagging the dog. We need a clean break, and a new approach.

Planning will begin now on configuring new outdoor areas, hopefully not only to offer smokers a place to go for a cigarette, but perhaps to create a patio/beer garden of substance. We’ll be working on it. As always, your suggestions are welcomed. Thanks for your patronage.

  1. I know you're going to get a lot of grief about it, but I want to thank you for this decision. While smoke doesn't bother me, there have been a couple times I haven't been able to go to your place because of a couple friends who are physically unable to go into any place with smoke in it--and yes, that included the "smoke free" half of your establishment. And if you have any worries, just look at Cumberland Brewery's experience. They enacted a smoking ban before Louisville's took effect and their business wasn't hurt in the slightest.

  2. I'll echo much of what Scott said - smoke doesn't bother me, but kudos for taking a proactive decision and choosing to enact this for the betterment of customers and employees without someone telling you to do so.

I'm not the only one who knows your thoughts mean a lot in the local restaurant and beer community - I think even those who may disagree with this decision will trust you're doing the best thing for the P&PH.

  3. I applaud this decision. On a personal level I have not been able to bring my family to Sportstime/Richos because my son suffers from allergies and a slight case of asthma. After January we will definitely become patrons. From a professional level I think this is the right move for your establishment. The truth is that most people don’t smoke – those that do can still light up outside and the 80% that don’t can enjoy a smoke free environment. Most importantly, your workers will enjoy the same protections that many people take for granted.
Roger may get some grief from a vocal minority, but the vast majority appreciates this change.
